Long in the tooth they may be, but the original line-up, who’ve walked the earth for some considerable time, are not ready for extinction just yet. The seminal noise-pop-rock act, still have enough vigor and urgency to shame many young upstarts.
‘Pieces’ the second single taken from their extraordinarily well received ‘Farm’ album, bursts into life with delightfully catchy hooks and blistering busy lead-guitar work – J. Mascis doing what he does best. Lyrically ‘Pieces’ conveys a feeling of uncertainty matched with a need for reassurance (“I’m not sure, I’ll take your word – I need some help to grab the pieces of our love”), the bands delivery on the other hand manages to embody a cocksureness and confidence in their well honed and influential sound, managing to do so without detracting from the inflected subtly or fragility hinted at in the lyrics.
