Delta are a young Birmingham duo comprising of guitarist and songwriter Andrew Grainger and singer Naomi Coleman, not, as you might have thought, Jim Vallie and Sweet Rosalyn. Musically, they sound heavily influenced by American country rock and soul. However, standout track, The Witch, is an acoustic minor blues number reminiscent of Fleetwood Mac’s Blackmagic Woman, while Boy From Nowhere borrows heavily from John Lennon‘s Oh Yoko
The Life & Times is a sugary sweet feel good album with soothingly brilliant vocals and the right blend of both toe-tapping stomps and quieter melancholic moments.
The album does perhaps lack a bit of edge. The twangy apple pie Americana can be a tad too saccharine and jaunty at times. If you like Dixie Chicks, Corrine Bailey Rae, Norah Jones and similar artists of that ilk, you’ll probably love Delta. If you’re a country-loving trucker with a long way to go and a short time to get there, who’s perhaps in touch with your feminine side, you could put on The Life & Times as you’re trucking through the night in your cocktail dress. Bliss.
