Isle of Wight four-piece Coach Party join us at Stereo in Glasgow as their worldwide tour kicks off, with support from Girl Scout and Fiona-Lee.
Singer-songwriter Fiona-Lee has joined the tour for five nights and starts us off. Her set was full of heartfelt lyrics sung with a hauntingly beautiful voice at times reminding me of Daughter, and as a nice coincidence her song ‘Mother’ is what finishes her set.
Up next, Swedish rockers Girl Scout, on their very first visit to Scotland. Their upbeat indie rock is infectious and lead vocalist Gemma has top-tier crowd work, teaching the audience the Swedish for “motherfucker” (something of a pattern among visiting Swedes, it seems) while Viktor fixes his guitar which disastrously breaks during a guitar solo, a malfunction the band comfortably plays off.
They finish up with ‘Do You Remember Sally More?’ as Gemma announces “our main song, some reviewers like to call it our only good song”. Luckily the reviewers are wrong.
Then, time for the headliners joined by Jeff the skeleton who is no longer allowed on stage… Coach Party are touring on the back of releasing their recent album ‘Killjoy’ and in a long set they play almost the entire album alongside a couple of older songs.
Their material covers a wide range of genres from the almost pop ‘Born Leader’ to the screamy punk ‘Parasite’ and there could be more to come as lead singer Jess jokes about doing some Christmas covers. Off the back of supporting QOSTA and playing Glastonbury the band have had a great year so far and the album launch looks to keep them going strong.
Girls Scout’s bassist Evelina joins the band to conclude the set with ‘F.L.A.G’ and ‘Parasite’. It is a high octane closer filled with screams and by the end almost everyone is on the floor. The tickets for the rest of the tour are starting to sell out and Coach Party are building themselves a name for being a great live band. Tonight it was clear to see why.
