Sounding like the poor mans Lightning Seeds is a fall from grace indeed for the former founding member and one half of the song writing team behind Squeeze.
How can it be that the man who created such classics as ‘Cool For Cats’ and ‘Up the Junction’ has been reduced to churning out Radio 2 easy listening classics that barely even deserve a flicker of acknowledgement?
In a bid to sound a little bit different from the countless other four piece guitar bands out there, Difford has employed the use of a steel guitar, lending the album an air of cheesy American country, to the straight-laced, uninventive melodies.
‘My Mother’s Handbag’ epitomises how far Difford has fallen. “I often wondered what was in my mother’s handbag” he sings to a simple, dull finger picked guitar melody. It’s almost as if he widely cast his eyes around the room for inspiration and used the first object he saw. Difford may have once been a musical legend, but if he carries on record albums such as this one his reputation, as well as his song writing skills will also be in tatters.
