Chris Brokaw was a founder member of Codeine, while Geoff Farina is apparently best known for his time with Karate (cult-level indie-jazz/emo/slowcoremtrio). Yet, this album has far more to do with old Americana style music than any of the post-rock/post-punk sorta scene.
As an album it’s a perfectly pleasant listen – these two guys clearly know their country’s musical heritage, and they’ve clearly had a lot of fun in making this album together between the two of them. Ironically, it was meant to be a split LP for an American Midwest hardcore label, so this is clearly about two people exploring their loves in a musical field that they enjoy that’s different from their day jobs.
And I’ve enjoyed listening to this album, but it’s hard to feel once you’ve listened to it that this album is going to do more than raise a few eyebrows or pique a little bit of interest amongst more than a handful of listeners. But then, it clearly wasn’t conceived as such, so fair play to it.
As many three star albums are often summed up: good, not for everyone, but fine within its field.
