Formerly leader of the somewhat legendary Glasgow party funk band The Federation of the Disco Pimp, Marco Cafolla is keeping the funk flag flying.
The composer/songwriter and producer has put together a new band with new vocalist Alex Baylis fronting an eight-piece band still full of brass and grooves, while cinematic and expansive.
The follow-up to his solo debut ‘Cowboys & Africans’ is similarly soulful but merges modern and retro, taking inspiration from the 1980s as well as absorbing David Bowie and St. Vincent for the epic title track.
Opener ‘Whatcha Talking About’ sports an electronic beat and a guitar/bass interplay groove more akin to Talking Heads. ‘The Running Man’ as well as its film referencing title contains instrumental which could soundtrack an ’80s movie, while ‘Keep Moving’ mixes up ESG-style post-funk with the sound of the more traditional New York ’70s dance scene.
Other highlights include the breathy ‘Feel 4 U’ which gives regular soul a 21st century twist. And pulsating instrumental closer ‘Time (To Die)’ channels A-ha and the Blue Nile for a surprise end to an already eclectic mix that keeps the party going from start to finish.
