A busy Glad Cafe was the setting for the first full band show for Broken Chanter since their album launch at CCA late last year.
But first we got Raveloe, aka Kim Grant, who charmed the audience with six songs on her guitar, which she almost dropped during song number two – this was a hilarious moment but she recovered with aplomb to continue…
The best Raveloe song in the set IMHO was definitely ‘New House’, where she nailed the PJ Harvey vs St. Vincent vibe. Along with her charming patter she is definitely one to watch and her EP is available to stream… Also the story of the dug in the suitcase gave some added value.. Last song ‘Catkins’ was also great…
Broken Chanter arrived onstage with a slightly different lineup to previous gigs, so as well as David MacGregor on guitar/vocals we also had Lola in Slacks drummer Leslie, Bart on guitar and Charlotte on bass.
With two great albums of material to play with, they blasted through eleven tracks, and it was great to see former contributors and people who had made these things happen in the audience (Audrey, Paul Savage, Lauren and others) because these records have been immense and heartfelt.
Highlights were many but it was just to see David in full effect – hopefully his blend of indie/trad/synth (is there really a category?) will pull through to bigger, more regular events – the raw talent on display really deserves this…
Catch them live while you can – or buy a record – BM cannot recommend enough…
