This, the lead track from forthcoming Belles album ‘A Bit of Previous’, is an absolute banger, the best thing they have done in years…
BM has always liked this band and followed their eccentric career but this track has a real buzz about it, not least due to Stevie Jackson’s incredible moothie riff, a ballistic missile of a sound, while the tune is also backed up by some of the best bass playing BM has heard in a good while, bold, funky and throbbing…thanks Belfast…
And of course Murdoch’s vocals, deadpan non-specific accent, and sardonic as feck, including an almost a cappella middle eight, with spattering references to the trials of middle-aged life – these lyrics are age-appropriate and reflect so many of the things that people dwell on…yes the “this is my life” refrain could signal too much self-reflection, but balanced with the furious playing, it sounds just right.
This could well be the track of the year, and BM is hoping to be at Doune the Rabbit Hole where B&S will headline on one Saturday – expect some real emotion, and some appreciation, because this lot appear to be up for anything this year… just going to put it on one more time…
