Good news – the seating has been removed for this Celtic Connections show at the CCA to give Callum Easter a chance to get the audience moving.
Starting with a few solo numbers on the accordion he then set off his home-made electronic beats as he got further into the songs, a mixture of old and new material. He has developed so much in the last few years, from mutant folk to torch song and even rap, as evident on several newish tracks tonight.
Midway through the set he brought out several other musicians on various instruments to flesh out his sound, and the music just got more intense over the piece.
Old favourite such as ‘Tell ‘Em Boy’ and ‘System’ were evident in the set, as was new material from his latest release ‘Get Forever – Delete Don’t Want’. And as usual he engaged with the audience, fixing them with his WTF stare, and his slightly confused patter as he fiddled with the settings of various instruments between songs.
A very enjoyable night from a still developing artist – with Callum Easter you really don’t know what you are going to get next but you know it will be interesting, quite possible weird, but always repaying the effort.
