Is that a banjo? Notoriously good live, 6DR’s recorded debut sadly fails to capture the visceral excitement of their stage show – and with that in mind, what might be a rather neat trick on stage recorded becomes, well, a banjo. With vocals akin to Feist or even Bjork, there’s a lack of energy on lead track ‘Go Canada’ which is borne out by the sound, not nearly full enough to justify the tune which sounds like it has a hook struggling to shine through. Similarly the production on the second track here does the song a disservice – a tune whose Russian feel deserves better but even the brass is anonymous and rather than the ears the song is propelled straight to that dark part of the brain where stuff is filed under “meh”.
