Astral Planes (formerly Paper Planes) already have a couple of well-received seven-inch singles to their name but this mini-album reveals new depths to the band’s songwriting. While there is no doubt Astral Planes have a knack for gritty rock n’roll, ‘Sit Still Child’ reveals they also have a talent for elegiac pop.
‘Shut the Door’ is a tremendous start, with its 50s girl group vibe and lush, Spector-esque chorus. ‘Disconnected. I Know’ featured previously on a double A-side, but its great to hear it included as it really is a brilliant tune which combines the band’s rockier elements with their ear for pop melodies. Their first single, ‘Doris Day’ is also a welcome inclusion, and with its lurching bassline and tempestuous vocals showcases the band at their most primal.
‘Sleep of Reason’ is possibly the catchiest song here, bringing Astral Plane’s burgeoning pop sensibilities to the fore, while closer ‘Disguise’ is a classic-sounding number which takes those 50’s influences into the 21st century in fresh and exciting style.
‘Sit Still Child’ captures the raw, unbridled sound of a band full of youthful vigor and energy, but the most exciting thing of all is its tantalizing promise that the best is yet to come.
