This is an interesting release… from a Scottish rapper with some very wide influences.
Wurrd Jenkins is one half of Shadow People, a Scottish rap duo, but this is his solo stuff…
Track one ‘Tape Deck’ (a previous single) is apparently about having “nae respect” for wanting a tape deck. The backing track is really great and catchy, and the samples blend into the track really well… A reference to “Scottish rapping” recalls others including Stanley Odd, probably an influence…
‘Flying Boys’ is very different, a female vocal recalling Motown and also Massive Attack in the backing track… very smooth, and then Jenkins comes in with his Scottish brogue, wonderful…
‘Two Fingurrs’ has more samples, jazz and soul, while Jenkins raps about alcohol and short lives – again very original in the combination of melody, beats and samples…
The last two tracks are pretty short, ‘It’s Soul’ riffing off an old soul sample (Isaac Hayes?) while last track ‘Moving Castle’ starts with a spoken word sample and then morphs into another smooth backing track, which Jenkins raps over, about belief and maybe redemption… with a lovely female vocal to end.
