With atmospherics like this, no wonder Wozniak waited until Hallowe’en to release their debut single. Enough to send a chill down your spine, ‘MFMB’ and ‘New Hampshire’ are two tracks from this Edinburgh based rock quartet that have you heading for behind the sofa.
While that may sound ominous and imposing, the music is actually very good. Haunting harmonies and vocals play well against a solid, relentless beat and musical accompaniment. Loosely bracketed under the “rock drone” category, to call these tracks droning would be an unfair slant to the artists.
Yes, there is a lot of repetition and standing at over four minutes, it may be a little too long. But importantly, for a very first release, there is the scope and reaching confidence of a band who know exactly what they want to achieve.
And on top of all that, it’s loud. Describing their own music as “Loud – think jet engines, hurricanes, dinosaurs, blackholes” – Wozniak weren’t lying when they described how big and boisterous their sound is.
Enjoyable and very listenable, these new tracks are a welcome addition to the plethora of artists spewing out material at this time of year. Perfectly suited to long winter nights and huddled from the cold gigs, well worth a check out.
