Unmasked may come across as a bit of a cold fish at first but, before you know it, you’ll be doing lobotomised gibbon impressions, the likes of which have not been seen since Bez and The Happy Mondays.
The only downside to this kind of album is that, with tracks seeping into and out of each other, it becomes very hard to tell one apart from the other. But then, you just think, hey, chill out, it’s all music, loosen those limbs once more. And once you’re in this frame of mind, you will get so much more out of this album.
There’s a lovely warm glow you get, which this reviewer hasn’t had since The Avalanches brought out Since I Left You, or even since The Prodigy, in their ‘Firestarter’ or ‘Breathe’ heyday. About halfway through the album, just when you think he’s running out of steam, the mysterious Mr Colony changes gears and brings the bass, as it were, up to 11 and we are then given something to really rumble our guts.
Wolf Colony may well be anonymous but his music certainly is not. There are flavours of both ‘Rapture’-era Blondie and Violator-era Depeche Mode, which only serve to make this confection all the more delicious.
