The festival season is now well and truly warmed up and wuth T and Rockess out of the way it’s time for itm?’s favourite weekend of the year.
The Wickerman, which takes place on Friday 24th and Saturday 25th July, near Dundrennan on the Solway coast, always comes in top for lineup as well as atmosphere and this year is no different – headliners in the Human League, The Zutons, Utah Saints and Magic Numbers, plus some real itm? favourites in Idlewild and Billy Bragg, as well as The Amphetameanies, Isa & the Filthy Tongues, Candi Staton, Dreadzone and Goldblade.
And, some real retro treats and guilty pleasures in Penetration, Bad Manners, Zion Train, UK Subs and The Dickies.
And, in a festival that demands local/unsignedstage, there’s the Solus Tent – surely the best lineup of new Scottish talent, headed up by The Seventeenth Century, A Band Called Quinn , Remember Remember, Punch & The Apostles, We Were Promised Jetpacks, Meursault, and The Second Hand Marching Band among the 20 acts.
Add to that a comedy tent headed up by Phil Kay, DJ lessons from Danny Rampling, yoga to firewalking and biking to a headphone disco, there’s plenty to keep punters amused if – and it’s a big if – there’s a spare few minutes between bands. There’s even an attempt, in Homecoming year, to break the world record for reading Burns’ poetry (volunteers still being accepted).
And of course, the finale of the burning of the Wickerman himself. This year, the massive statue will be in the form of a poetry-reading Rabbie. Which seems wrong somehow, but there you go.
