Now in his thirty-eighth year, Rivers Cuomo returns with the lead single from yet another self-titled album that takes a pop at the state of popular music and a refusal to change his image to suit the market.
The verses sport an acoustic groove that’s almost reminiscent of Beck’s ‘Clap Hands’, but with Cuomo offering fairly clunky couplets such as “Everyone likes to dance to a happy song/with a catchy chorus and a beat so they can sing along”
The verses thankfully give way to a chorus where the guitars sound grand and epic and Cuomo spits that he “doesn’t give a hoot about what you think”. It’s all fine and well, but for a song that’s rebelling against the trends that bands are seen to conform to, it’s all too reserved and behind all the bluster of the distorted guitar riff, there’s not much of a song going on and there’s nothing to really hook in the mind and make repeat listens worthwhile.
Perhaps it’s just a sign of Cuomo growing up as he begins to grow into middle age, but a more mature Weezer? I sure don’t care ‘bout that.
