Vital Idles

Left Hand (Upset the Rhythm)

By • Jul 18th, 2018 • Category: long players

BM has had an interest in this lot ever since their Frabbits support slot at Barrowlands in 2016, after which they seemed to go under the radar, but now this…

There was an album launch in Mono on June !st, which BM missed, but hey ho… album released July 1st, 2018.

And it is really good, very simple, 14 tracks of pure pop bliss, the female lead vocals sarcastic again, and so deadpan, very minimal as well… the simple guitar chords, (no offence, simple is usually best) and the straight drum and bass makes something extraordinary….

The band are based in Glasgow but are a bit short on personal biographies – J. Higgins, N. Lynch, R. MacLean and M. Walkerdine is about as much as we get… Songs are not all brief, ranging from 2 to around 5 minutes – BM thinks on first listening that this is an album she could really grow into, so it will be on the playlist in the boudoir, the limousine and in the penthouse – VI, yous should take this as a compliment…

Anyway, it is an excellent album, although for someone of BM’s vintage it does recall some Vital early 80s acts like The Raincoats, The Slits and (more mid 80s) The Shop Assistant, and of course, the Velvet Underground. Nothing wrong with that!
