The Music of Others - Glad Volume 1 (Glorious Traces)

By • Sep 21st, 2019 • Category: Album review

Glasgow’s Glad Cafe recently survived a massive roof repair bill and the quality of acts on this fundraiser shows what an important part the southside venue plays in the Scottish music scene.

Ranging across genres, the likes of Sorren Maclean, Adam Stafford and eagleowl perform versions of each other’s songs in a complex criss-cross.

While Adam Stafford offers a dark take on Kathryn Joseph’s Worm, there’s a spectacularly strange take on his ‘Phantom Billions’ from Paul Vickers and The Leg. Other highlights include Broken Chanter going full electro for a C Duncan cover who himself is in dreamy space mode to handle modern folkie Alasdair Roberts, who in turn delivers a fine interpretation of Emma Pollock’s ‘Adrenaline’.

Rick Redbeard’s ‘Wildlove’ gets the full chamber pop treatment from Modern Studies and Californian A. Wesley Chung turns rapper Jamie Scott’s ‘Another World’ into a marvellous modern folk song.

With a mammoth 22 tracks here there’s genuinely something here for any music lover to get excited over – raise the roof even.
