Worthy doesn’t always mean worthwhile. Charity singles usually raise some needed cash before cluttering up our shelves. However, this fundraiser for farming projects in Malawi has the bonus of preserving and modernising the country’s culture. Big names in electronic dance rework and reuse field recordings from the last century – Luke Vibert deconstructs a traditional tune into an indie floor-filler, while Rudimental offers a brass-infused head-nodder. Jimi Needles keeps his source material – guitar pop in the vein of Bhundu Boys – pretty much intact. However, best may be Mwana Wa’s hybrid of house and blips with African chants. All in all, well worth the ‘donation’.
