Wednesday night at the Buff Club revealed a band that is wildly creative with a set full of intelligent, beautifully crafted and compelling songs. When any shiny new band announce their debut gig, a small part of us really wants to see them play a terribly under-rehearsed set in front of an audience that will boo and throw fruit. But Toy Tin Soldier are totally clued up and knew exactly what hook-savvy, addictive acoustic songs to toss into the crowd of fans-to-be. ‘Only Pictures’ and the rather impressive ‘Bells’ with all its delicate chimes, were the perfect damp-eyed, mobile phones swaying in the air kind of tunes. However, don’t be fooled into thinking this five piece are only in it for the slow jams.
The up-tempo ‘Politician’ was easily the best song of the night, joining ‘18’ and their rendition of John Martyn’s ‘May You Never’ as the songs that stick in your head for days after. Possibly the most striking thing about this band was the perfect mix of ragged honesty and occasional falsetto highlights that make up singer Joe Gallagher’s voice. His vocals and remarkable songwriting are a rare find, and accompanied by Paul Mosley on guitar, Gary John Kane on bass guitar, Scott Cowie on drums and Greg Barnes on keyboard, percussion and backing vocals, these guys have put together a dynamic, vibrant sound that will definitely be buoyant in the current music scene. Other songs included ‘Joy’, ‘Bright Eyes’, ‘Chaos’ and finishing with ‘Send Up the Flare’. Visit www.toytinsoldier.com to listen to the music and check out the upcoming gigs. Although new to the Glasgow music scene, consider Toy Tin Soldier one to follow as they make rather essential live music.
