Ohhhhhh. When the violins join in on title track, “Put Your Slippers On”, it’s one of the finest moments of any song I’ve ever heard.
Yes, this band’s name is insane. If you’re the kind of person that lets that puts you off, fuck off, you won’t get how amazing this is if you’re that narrow-minded, away and listen to Kaiser Chiefs, we don’t need you here.
Less digression! Right, well, Tim and Sam’s… are a band, that specialise in songs which are immensely and impossibly beautiful. This four-track EP is completely instrumental, allowing for no flab, no bum notes, no imperfections. Tim and Sam’s… are comfortable with gradually layering songs, adding a guitar here, a bass here, drums here, violins here, and that’s fine, that works. It sounds a bit like folk-post-rock, if that’s possible. The textures and overlapping ideas of post rock with the cosy feel of folk. I’ve invented a genre! Excellent.
I don’t know how ambitious this band is. There was talk on the PR release of play on Radio 1, and that kind of thing. That’s great. If they’re the kind of band that wants to get huge with their stunning, brilliantly arranged songs, that’s good. Personally, though, I imagine this band playing in a barn somewhere, on a warm day, laughing at how great their songs are.
Sure, they’re a hassle for gig posters, and unless they have a Fugazi-like sternness about merchandise, I imagine it’s a struggle to get their name on t-shirts and badges. As a listening experience, I couldn’t think of anything less of a struggle to listen to (in a good way, not in a Katie Melua style coffee table blandness way). Quite simply, these guys are pretty special.
