The Wrong Boyfriends’ debut album Wrong Fucking Century Darling has to be one of the most bizarre albums to be released this year.
It has a very grungy and brooding indie rock sound that can be very sinister and dark at some points.
The lyrics are a little odd with an outline of humour and wit around them. The album covers subject matter such as turning down prostitutes and changing girlfriends on Valentine’s Day.
The songs compliment each other. Where some are very heavy sounding songs, others provide a lighter sound with more witty lyrics.
Songs such as ‘Dreadnought’, ‘Taking Turns On Sharon’ and ‘Bearpit’ particularly stand out among other songs on the album.
A lot of people might not get what The Wrong Boyfriends are all about right away, in fact, a lot of fans of the band might still not be sure what they’re all about, but give the album a listen through and you’ll find it’s very hard to turn off.
Its moody guitars and eerie tones pull the listener into an abstract world. It’s definitely worth a listen for being unique.
