Stepping out of the shadow of their work with Jenny Lewis, ‘Fire Songs’ doesn’t exactly see The Watson Twins moving far from what they have been known for but then again, if it ain’t broke, why bother fixing it?
Opening track ‘How Am I To Be’ is lovely and sets the tone for what is to follow.
It’s a comforting album, full of big sounds emerging from small instruments but all the time, the vocals of the twins is at the forefront and thankfully they have the talent and range to carry it all off. The choruses and melodies come thick and fast with ‘Lady Love Me’ and ‘Dig A Little Deeper’ managing to sound instantly recognisable even though they are all new tracks. This signifies the comfort and ease that surrounds this record and The Watson twins, on this form, are destined to ebb around for a long time to come.
