Could this be the most highly-anticipated release of 2018 to date?
There has indeed been a long wait for new releases from TTS, like almost four years. So after their recent live outings on small and big stages, this looks like a spoiler for that new album. BM has been a massive fan of TTS from (almost) the start, from the Barfly to the Barras, and beyond. The down south gigs have been beyond BM’s logistics but the last live appearance in Scotland supporting Chvrches in 2016 was revelatory, again…
This is very interesting, a wee bit of a change of direction maybe – there are no squalls of guitar feedback to speak of, and a relatively high bpm (new drummer), with quite a clean vocals line, synths at the back of the guitar and bass. There is even a suggestion of funky bass playing during the verses, not exactly Talking Heads or Interpol but…
It is a cracking, catchy track which balances the inevitable gloom of James’ lyrics (“I don’t want to be round here anymore…”) with some subtle pop sensibilities and hooks, for example that piano coming in around half way through to create a sublime fusion of noise…
Listening to it on repeat now, it’s a real grower…
