Having arrived on the Scottish music scene in 2007 with the excellent single ‘Eyes’ The Scottish Enlightenment have since undertaken somewhat of a hiatus, taking time out perhaps to focus on creating their own period of enlightenment. The fruits of their labour appear to have been worth the wait if this selection of songs is anything to go by. From opening track ‘Pascal’ which sounds like a more polished early Arab Strap song it is clear that the band have built on their early promise. ‘If You Would Just Try A Bit Harder’ is a melancholic, brooding number which is reminiscent of the criminally underrated Walkmen. ‘All Homemade Things’ is the standout track for me though and lazy Pavement comparisons aside, it is as good an example of their work as you could cite to a first time listener. If this is a snapshot of what’s to come from their forthcoming debut full length album, St Thomas, then Dunfermline could soon be well and truly back on the musical map.
