Opener ‘Seems Like a Different Guy’ is a bit different to their usual though, with what sounds like some processed or reverse guitar licks before it settles down into a bar room piano mid-pace with some nice food references – “Sushi stuck between my teeth”, in the usual grumbled vocal stylee…
The next few are more like previous releases, with ‘I Can’t Fight This Feeling’ sounding like The Cramps vs Elvis and ‘Thieving Cunt’ more like The Bad Seeds on an even worse day….
Further in, we get some great surf guitar on ‘The Flapping of Your Gums’, oofft indeed missus!
‘I Don’t Care What You Do’ is great blues with atonal guitar lines while ‘Mule for Your Mother’ is a live recording, presumably in some toilet in Edinburgh…
‘Now Now Now’ is further mutated blues, while ‘Ghosts’ is sparser and has a great backbeat to accompany the graveyard tone of the vocals.
Last track ‘Unfinished Business’ has hints of dub reggae amongst the doomy instrumentation – and the subject matter is less of a love song, more like an order of psychiatric sectioning…
This album is their most varied and (ahem) mature to date and BM really hopes to witness this lot live in the flesh, so to speak…
