Now, I have heard of The Micro Band before, but I’m not sure I’ve actually heard them.
Or it could be that they have changed style, personnel, or haircuts since they brushed up against my ears.
Either way, I’m sure I’d have remembered this Edinburgh sextet. From the off, with polyrhythmic percussion and meandering but precise guitar work, and opening line “This is a 5G palm tree”, it’s a bit of a rollercoaster ride through a southern African theme park.
Aptly, lyrical fragments are inspired by the writings in a friend’s travel diary and you can well believe that they have traversed the world with said pal in a magpie-like tour that appropriates musical bits and pieces the same way that the likes of Peter Gabriel, Talking Heads and Vampire Weekend have. Meaning that while there’s nothing brand new here per se, it’s a joyous, exhilarating mix that promises a wild time if they can pull it off live*.
“What an amazing experience” goes the refrain. Well, quite possibly. No pressure…
