This new compilation comes ahead of the next planned release from The Media Whores and contains several new tracks plus a lot of greatest bits from their first three albums. They are familiar figures on the Scottish live music scene, having supported many larger bands as well as headlining their own shows.
This album is dominated by their fairly distinctive punk-influenced sound, you can see a lineage going right back to The Clash, Stranglers, Ruts and The Damned. There is also a lot of politics mixed into the tracks and if anything are probably getting more furious over the ‘Decade of Defiance’ they have been playing together. There have been a couple of lineup changes over the years and a pretty major boost when album number 3 ‘Dangerous Minds’ was nominated for the UK Mercury Music Prize in 2016.
The songs themselves stand up as anthemic, angry, funny, heartfelt and clever – these guys don’t mess about and are straight to the point about war, poverty, international affairs and a whole lot more.
At 18 tracks this is a lot to take but it has to be said that it all killer, no filler and each track goes at it with some attack.
Personal faves are ‘Do You Think I’m Lying?’, anti-fracking anthem (what else but?) ‘Frack Off’ which harks back in spirit to ancient Edinburgh punks The Valves’ ‘No Surf in Portobello’ but there are a good deal of other tracks here with so much to say.
The handful of new tracks sound fresh and BM hopes to see some shows announced later this year to promote the new album – and also wishes The Whores another Decade of Defiance .
