Album review

The Maccabees

There’s nothing like a short, sharp album of spiky, guitar-driven pop songs to get you going, first thing in the morning. Thus, that’d be the perfect time to play this album. The 13 songs on offer here all have that dayglo, boisterous quality that the very best guitar pop records possess. There’s a vague hint of The Rezillos in The Maccabees’ tales of local heroes and adolescent fumblings in love, particularly on new single Precious Time and if they don’t yet have that band’s way with a melody, there’s more than enough enthusiasm and mischief to make this CD a very worthwhile purchase.
