Any fan of great songwriting should be very excited about the debut release from WET Records. Part of the group spearheading it is John Earls, who ran Teletext’s music page ‘Planet Sound’ who regularly uncovered many a revelatory band. The Incredible Flight Of Birdman are the first signing to the new label.
It’s pleasing to say that the single is an absolute belter. Elements of Morrissey, early Arctic Monkeys and even the smallest hint of The Divine Comedy pop up throughout, but always in the spirit of the aforementioned artists rather than trying to cheaply emulate them. It’s rare that a band can achieve such maturity on their debut release. Even b-side ‘We Are Made’ sounds like a song that many bigger bands would kill for.
It’s difficult to know what to be more excited about. TIFOB are surely destined for stardom, and if WET Records can keep uncovering bands such as this, then they’re likely to be taking their place alongside the very best labels before too long. An absolute gem.
