Scottish pseudo-indie-scene botherers Hector Collectors have been a bit quiet lately (as John Shuttleworth used to say…) so this is a very welcome new track, the lead off a three track EP.
A somewhat scabrous and satirical take on the Britpop era “stars” getting older, it has a typically catchy HC riff and some memorable lines (not that sort but it does reference The Groucho Club). Almost wistful at times, it is a hard to know whether this is also a tribute to the two bands of the track title or not – it could in fact almost be a distant cousin of ‘Country House’ by Blur, ie a song about people who have too much success and don’t know what to do with it… “crippled with nostalgia”…
There are some great ’90s references – “Buzzcocks intros rounds…”, “golden memories of Tony Blair…” and a mention for long-forgotten Scottish Britpop also-rans Whiteout, for goodness sake – The Hectors certainly have a way with tunes and words, good to have them back, albeit momentarily…
