This is the first single from Mickey 9’s frontman Dougie O’Neil’s solo project, and it’s a singalong corker!
Seemingly an autobiographical trawl through his formative years in dodgy bands and the malarkey of youth, it has a great chorus and witty lyrics (“The Datsuns singer caught a Bucky bottle…”).
There’s a lot of nostalgia between the lines of course, a kind of “all our yesterdays” of seemingly great ideas and daft behaviour. The music is a collision of scuzzy metal riffs and glam stylings with a touch of The Clash at their poppiest.
It’s fun, catchy and a much-needed shot in the arm against the mid-winter gloom, complete with a false ending and one last blast to catch radio DJs out, the scamps… “Play me heavy metal on my deathbed…” indeed.
