Absolute scenes unleashed in Glasgow on Monday night, as American metalcore band The Devil Wears Prada performed to a sold-out Slay.
The bill for the evening was stacked as we had performances from three support acts: Senna, Ocean Grove and Kingdom of Giants, who had the crowd going absolutely wild with the use of walls of death and circle pits to get that adrenaline going. I have to say that it was a pretty incredible selection of bands to get the crowd pumped for the main act.
TDWP exploded onto the tiny Slay stage with hits such as ‘Mammoth’, ‘Watch Tower’ and ‘Danger: Wildman’. The crowd went absolutely nuts and were encouraged to dance, mosh and even crowd surf, even if you never have before (I was tempted).
Growing up I’d heard of the band but hadn’t really listened to TDWP before tonight’s show and so was suitably impressed by the energy and absolute bangers that were performed one after another by the six piece band. The use of two vocalists (Mike Hranica and Jeremy DePoyster) for singing and screaming in particular was interesting and kept the crowd constantly on their toes.
There’s something special about watching a performance in Slay as it’s such an intimate venue, it always creates the most fun and wildest of atmospheres, No matter where you stand in the venue, if there’s a wall of death… which there certainly was, then you are getting involved!
As the show continued, the atmosphere was so incredible that even Jeremy decided to venture through the crowd, with his guitar, to the bar mid-performance. Side note: Jeremy mentioned how his grandparents are from Glasgow, which ultimately made me appreciate him and the band a tiny bit more.
TDWP ended the set with an electric performance of their songs ‘Chemical’, ‘Sacrifice’ and ‘Hey John, What’s Your Name Again?’. By the end, everyone in the crowd was buzzing, sweaty and on the way out, I even witnessed a group of four limping up the stairs and one unfortunately without shoes on, talking about how they’re getting “too old for this”.

Having never really listened to The Devil Wears Prada, I can honestly say that I had a class night – from the catchy music, banter from the band and the overwhelming atmosphere of the audience; I definitely will continue to explore TDWP’s discography and will have to check out another gig – as long as they don’t miss out Glasgow again…
