The Chills have a long, long history – from New Zealand, they are veterans of the international music scene with a discography and scope too various to go into here. Their latest single, a lead-in for an album to be released in the spring, is a jaunty wee number about big rocks and things…
They visit these shores infrequently these days, although BM had a memorable live experience with them in 2014 (see the ITM archive for that!).
“Give me the power of ancient stones” intone the vocals, while the guitar jangle is present and correct. There are quite primitive synth riffs, a great middle section and a pulsing backline – if anyone knows their way around a catchy pop single, after all these decades, it is The Chills!
Is the track a musing on accumulated knowledge, or the lack of it – who knows? Maybe a paean to their longevity? BM salutes them anyway…
