The Beat Maras are a ramshackle bunch. Currently based in London, gathering members from as far flung as Israel, they are a different composition from the recent, run of the mill Camden rigmarole. Not exactly bar chords, riffs, and stylish façade, more, finding lyrical inspiration from their working backgrounds. ‘She got her fingers in pies, She got her fingers’ Are the words on ‘Getaway Car’, which can be inextricably linked to bassist ‘Louis the Sheriff’, who quite astonishingly, is a pie maker by trade. This irony would surely dawn on any rational songwriter. ’Tis ripe for parody from every angle, but the bands biggest crime is attaching such a sub-standard vocal to promising sections of music. There is a Kasabian-style roughness to the arrangments, without the electronic element, but unfortunately, the talk of pies and fingers isn’t really in keeping with a rock rhythm. Contrary to other reviews, they are not the Doors, and will never be remotely close to sounding like them. Jim Morrison can rest easy.

I very much doubt the well known saying ‘fingers in pies’ was inspired by the drummers job as a pie maker!!! I think that is the sort of connection a 5 year old would make!
I’ve just been to their myspace page and have to admit I’m impressed. There are very catchy riffs and very clever, thoughtful lyrics! to pull 1 line from 1 song and to claim “’Tis ripe for parody from every angle” when there are songs such as the beautiful ‘Huaraz Song’ & ‘Basic Chemistry’ is ridiculous!
The Doors and Jim Morrison this band do NOT sound like, but in my opinion, and everyone’s entitled to one, they are far better than the run of the mill Libertines ‘wanna-bes!
I suggest you, the reader, check them out for yourselves! http://www.myspace.com/thebeatmaras
They’re f*cking awesome!!!
They are not awesome.
I checked out their myspace before posting any review.
If you think ‘ive got my fingers in pies, Ive got my fingers’ is lyrically adept, you need your ears checked.
Still each to their own, I simply pointed out they could do with some better words over some promising beats.
And also, I never said they sound like the Doors, but if you peruse other music publications, you will see many references to the Doors.
At least we both agree they don’t sound like them.
I have just ‘Internet discovered’ these guys and think they’re actually pretty sweet! Very rough but good varying music that blends old and new.
The Reviewer “Donny” seems to have his own agenda. And saying. . . .
“If you think ‘ive got my fingers in pies, Ive got my fingers’ is lyrically adept, you need your ears checked.”
. . . . is just Moronic! Who ever expected every line in every song to be poetic brilliance? Picking one line, from one song to then use to Slate the band? WTF! And who knows what significance it had to the Band/Singer.
