It’s little wonder that The Ambersons are the latest to get the music afficionados of Manchester interested. Theirs is a polished sound, even at this early stage, and the varied nature of the tracks here are enough to suggest that new material (which the band are now working on) should be something to look forward to.
In the meantime though, this EP is plenty to be getting on with, with lots to enjoy for fans of upbeat indie with a twist of pop. Opener ‘A Little Love’ has the epic, spacious feel of a festival hit and a singalong chorus to match. It also has a lovely chord progression in the chorus that lifts it above the ordinary. ‘A Beautiful Mistake’ is a different beast, with pounding electro drums and a dirty bass line that carries it along with a real power.
‘Mary Anne’ meanwhile has the slide guitar and slow burn feel of a country classic, with a catchy melody and a superb chorus swimming in harmony. Finally, ‘The New Adventures of Superman’ has the slightly kitsch feel of The Magic Numbers about it.
Over the course of only four songs, The Magnificent Ambersons demonstrates a genuinely versatile writing style that leaves you wanting to hear more. With any luck it won’t be too long before we can.
