Glasgow-based Susan Bear has played a major part in Scottish music over the years and BM has lost count of the number of live acts where she has played bass, keyboards or pretty much anything that is called for (Malcolm Middleton, Pictish Trail, and many others.
The first couple of tracks from the forthcoming album show her deft talent for a catchy riff, while still keeping it quite dark…
‘M6’ gives us a laid back musical backdrop, with breathy but spot-on vocals – almost like a gospel number, going a bit autotune at times, which really suits her voice (BM is not opposed to technology)…
‘Mario Golf 2’ is a softer number, also using treated vocals, and it is just a beautiful song, channelling classic songwriters down the ages but also brave enough to include a massive guitar wash towards the end, which builds into the last 30 secs of the track and is truly glorious.
Highly recommended!
