Forget any preconceptions you may have about a band called Superkings – these are no Oasis wannabes, no beer swilling, stage-strutting pub rockers. Instead the four-piece from Northwest England have crafted a sound that’s closer to the antipodean gothic of The Veils and Howling Bells, especially on this single’s B-side, the aptly named ‘Wolves and Ravens’. ‘Hit The Ground Running’ itself sounds as if it could be a riff-driven rock classic, but instead it’s a powerfully emotive slice of darkly majestic folk-pop, displaying more depth and musical nous than a million Wonderwalls. Never has a debut single so aptly summed itself up.
