Another Last Night from Glasgow-promoted gig, this happened in the balmy mid-summer, not always the best time for an indoor gig but there was a good turnout. The CCA, especially the seated configuration of the main auditorium, is not always BM’s favourite venue but it does have a blasting but clear sound system if you are down the front and all three of these bands have highly original instrumentation set-ups which were enhanced by this, so good choice actually Ian and co!
First up was the second ever gig from The Girl Who Cried Wolf, comprising Lauren Gilmour (vocals, keyboards, samples etc) and Audrey Tait (drums). They have released two tracks so far and they played them and a few others tonight.
‘Second Best’ and ‘Way Back Down’ were great, but ‘Warriors’ and ‘Upside Down’ were also highlights, the songwriting is very good indeed and the performance, well, they are double trouble, with Lauren belting it out while Audrey (well readers, you know BM thinks she is the best drummer in these parts) just slaying it when required. A very good first act indeed and BM hopes to see a lot more of GWCW soon.
Next up was The Martial Acts, the very talented Paul Kelly restarting his solo career after a few years doing other stuff. He had a fairly multi-talented bunch onstage with him tonight, including Carla J Easton and Gus on keyboards, plus Simon of Trembling Bells on drums… he blasted through most of his current EP ‘I Used To Be The Martial Arts’ while the images flashed up paid tribute to his love of ’70s Genesis (‘Fountain of Salamicis’, indeed!) It was a great set and the EP is fab, what more can BM say!
Headliner Stephen Solo gave us tracks from the new album Pi3, including ‘I Ate a Motorcycle’ and more besides, the sound system serving him well with the music off his tablet – it probably reminded BM most of Babybird, who is still well worth checking out, and Stephen’s voice soars like that Sheffield songsmith… BM looks forward to hearing ‘Pii3’ in full at some point as he is some songwriting talent.
Another great night courtesy of LNFG, with much more to come soon.
