It’s difficult to decide whether you listen to South Centrals brilliant early singles compilation or whether it assaults you and your ears are simply in the way. Either way it’s certainly an experience.
Clearly based in the electro genre the band has managed to attract an indie following as well with their punk edge. ‘Nothing Can Go Wrong’ represents the crossover well with the electro music combined with rough throaty vocals to great effect. This is the sort of music you can bounce your head to.
On ‘Revolution’ with it’s distorted vocals claiming “can’t stop the wheel” there is a handclap style beat that pulls you into the track and gives off an euphoric feel. At points, for instance on ‘Higher State of Consciousness’ you feel like you’re getting some respite from the hard edge but all of a sudden it builds back up, the vocals become increasingly frantic and the music breaks you again.
Even at it’s most melodic there is always a brutal undertone. The changes in tempo and sound are so frequent, it’s like South Central are wanting you to want to dance but they also want you to be confused about how to do it.
So at times it’s an exhausting experience but it’s well worth it. Buy it, let the album assault your senses and enjoy it.
