MC Solareye is back, which can only be a good thing. This single, the first of a series of planned releases, has a lolloping slightly reggae-like beat along with piano and other instruments to set up a wonkily upbeat but slightly threatening backdrop to Solareye’s ruminations. There’s a clever high female vocoder sample which gives the track that extra (Dave) hook.
Between the ambiguous but catchy chanty chorus “Give me a hole in my Soul and a nightcap” the verses are pretty dark, covering landscapes of post-apocalyptic doom, cities ravaged by war, “Caves under cityscapes” and general death and destruction, “Lurking in the shadows” and “21st people, ended by our vanity”.
So without any specific references, well have you seen the news lately?
As ever, the wordplay is whip-smart, the humour deadpan and the flow bang-on, the slightly child-like intonation of his rapping jarring with the subject matter. “Gallows humour for the Gallowgate” indeed – well it is good to have Solareye back with such strong and relevant material, good start to 2025…
