This cracking new single from Solareye (MC with East Coast collective Stanley Odd, here going solo) confirms his place as one of the most talented and creative rap forces in Scotland today. With no disrespect to some of the others, his stream of consciousness spurts of words are inventive, thoughtful, angry and always give up arresting images, both lyrical and musical. This solo track draws on similar tropes to his work with Stanley Odd but there is a sparser backing, a drum and bass clutter plus a few keyboards as the track progresses.
The chorus is a catchy ode to social marginalisation and foodbank culture (“Mind the Gap – when you alight in this place…, welcome to the edge”), the words cover more of the dark corners of modern life mined in previous Odd albums, along with his trademark self-deprecating wit.
BM hopes to see more of Solareye and The Odd during 2018 (there are a couple of live dates confirmed) and is glad for this return to the fray, we probably need you more than ever…
