As festival season gets into full swing it can be harder to catch your reliable favourite live acts gigging and you may need to look further afield.
While trying to judge upcoming shows Slothrust are quite enigmatic, their top-listed song on Spotify is a cover (‘Happy Together’ by The Turtles) and their “fans also liked” page is a list of bands that range from obscure to very obscure.
The 14+ show kicked off an unsociable 10 minutes after doors meaning this reviewer missed Stock Manager, but was assured they were great.
Diane Walker then came to the stage with a loop pedal tasked with getting the crowd singing, covers of ‘Beggin’ and ‘Teenage Dirtbag’ got the crowd involved but the best reception was for her recently released EP ‘Sinfully Modest’.
Slothrust started as they meant to go on, walking on to the stage and immediately opening with a barrage of noise – when Leah announced they were at the end of a “long short tour” some might have been worried that they were too exhausted to put energy into the show, but that worry could not have lasted long.
Kicking off with ‘7:30’ Slothrust jumped between their earlier grungier material to the recently released synthier tracks from ‘Parallel Timelines’ with the stage energy of an arena show. They played a one-off of ‘King Arthur’s Seat’, written while touring in Edinburgh and even the Glaswegian crowd appreciated the Scottish connection.
Slothrust may have had a long career but they played a show leaving many of the crowd with the giddy excitement of discovering a new favourite band.
