Britain and America are notorious for spewing out an array of influential, iconic and generally well renowned bands. There is not even the need to back up this claim. Therefore, it is mighty refreshing for Austailia to buck up its ideas and produce sleepmakeswaves. INXS is just not doing the country any justice.
…And So We Destroyed Everything is the first worldwide offering from the instrumental quartet sleepmakeswaves. The self-released debut album was only avalable to purchase in Austraila and it was put out for free on Lost Children Net Label in 2009. …and so we destroyed everything is a chance for sleepmakeswaves to make their mothers proud.
There are no vocals throughout the entire record, which may be for the best due to song titles such as ‘A Gaze Blank and Pitiless as the Sun’. If the lyrics were to follow suit, there would definitley be potential to get lost in dangerous prog rock terriority.
Opening track ‘To You They Are Birds, To Me They Are Voices in the Forest’ starts off dreamily but then lauches itself into an epic wall of guitars, comparable to Arcade Fire’s ‘Wake Up’ minus the overwhelming emotion.
The loud/quiet method has been used generously. Although less Nirvana/Pixies, and more gradual, as preferred by Smashing Pumpkins.
The second track ‘In Limbs and Joints’ similary builds itself up from a delayed repeated guitar riff. So does the third track, except it’s a delayed piano this time.
To be fair, the band’s twitter bio reads “We write love songs about delay pedals”. It’s nice to see that there’s a little humour buried deep down.
Overall, it is a flowing album nicely shaken up with cascading guiatars every now and again. …and so we destroyed everything would sound amazing live in a stadium, but whether sleepmakeswaves will ever be that successful is another story.
