This event was when we heard who had been nominated for the Scottish Alternative Music Awards, now in its 10th year and having had a interesting track record of tipping future big hitters (Capaldi and Cinnamon to name but two).
BM had actually never had a reason to set heels in the Hard Rock Cafe but the first floor bar and stage are pretty well appointed in terms of a sound system and sightlines – maybe the venue could host more events like this rather than the tribute bands who seem to dominate. There are also several interesting artefacts on the walls including a brace of Frightened Rabbit instruments and photos, very nice indeed.
This evening, amidst a reasonable crowd (some possibly attracted by the free gin cocktails, a bit of an acquired taste), host Jim Gellatly announced the nominations in the various categories. BM is pleased to report she had heard of some but not all, the best thing about the SAMAs because it puts new acts on the radar, every year. Also glad to see some of BM’s fave tips nominated, but the public vote then decides who actually wins.
The event itself is on Friday 25th October at St Lukes and if last year’s is anything to go by it should be a blast – check the website for the three live acts playing that night, all worth a listen.
In the meantime Glasgow based combo Shredd did their best to bring the house down during a lively set of around 7 or 8 songs. There was a good bit of Biffy-esque blast but also some interesting moments in the undertow of the guitar attack and BM will try to catch this lot again at the Tenement Trail this coming weekend.
