It’s easy to be sneery about a band who wear their influences so readily on their sleeves, and She’s Hit – who are named after a Birthday Party song, for goodness sake – are definitely not shy at hiding these. In fact, it’d take something bigger than a bushel to conceal the list of acts who have played a part in this Glasgow act’s sound.
And this sound is, broadly, garage trash with almost goth elements – lyrically and musically dark (sorry, noir), there are considerable nods to The Cramps and the Mary Chain (or Velvets if you’d prefer), while the pressure cooker atmosphere on occasion gives way to shoegaze-y waves of noise.
Standout tracks are probably the two singles, ‘Re:Peater’ – did the label come first or are they keeping in with their bosses? – and ‘Shimmer Shimmer’, though in particular, ‘Part One’ with the vocals of Astral Planes’ Jen Paley, is another standout.
However, the fact that the bonus disc that comes with this features such luminaries as Sons and Daughters and The Unwinding Hours doing remixes – and that these are so far removed in style from that of the tunes’ originators; hello Frog Pocket – says something about the band too. An act that have been much-mentioned in dispatches over the past year or so leading up to this release, She’s Hit have finally delivered the goods.
