BM had never seen Section 25 live before but was aware that the North West England (nr Blackpool)/Factory Records legends had more recently reduced their headcount from 5 down to 2, so it was a drums/percussion and guitar duo that wowed the fairly decent-sized audience at the H&P.
Firstly however we got JF Fox, a local act and one-man musical explosion. As the lights went down he started by wrapping a few lengths of gaffa tape around his torso, somewhat inexplicably – a bit of light bondage to start things off with? Playing a variety of instruments (including hitting a lot of things) ‘Foxy’ (as he refers to himself on Instagram) had only a colleague shining a torch on his face as he performed, for company. The music was heavily electronic but with live vocals, samples and other effect melding into the groove – it actually, and rather appropriately given the headliners, sounded like a rougher and readier version of Joy Division/New Order at times, with some electro and dub thrown in as well. Foxy himself was a whirl of freaky dancing, odd twitches and howling vocals. Very good indeed and BM will need to keep an eye out for future gigs.
Section 25 went down very well, with highlights from the 9 or 10 track set being old classics such as ‘From A Hilltop’ and encore ‘Dirty Disco’ – Vincent Cassidy on drums and Stephen Stringer on guitar clearly relished the appreciation showed by the crowd and put in a committed performance – BM hopes that the now duo continue to tour and make Glasgow a regular date.
