Scottish Indie popup 4 (A New Beginning)

Glasgow The Doublet (Saturday February 23rd 2019 )

By • Mar 10th, 2019 • Category: Gig review

Another great afternoon at The Doublet – unfortunately BM had some scheduling issues so only saw part of it, but what was seen was very good indeed!

Respect due yet again to Scottish Fiction and Last Night From Glasgow, also soundman Ritchie who did a fine job…

BM arrived in the middle of Elaine Lennon doing a sublime cover of ‘Wicked Game’. She played a couple more originals and covers and has a great voice and delivery.

Next up was Peter Johnstone, who was a last minute addition due to a cancellation. This singer from West Lothian is hilarious, like Half Man Half Biscuit vs Belle and Sebastian. His ode to his favourite teleshopping model was great, as was ‘Boghall Sky’, an ode to his home turf seen through the eyes of his (ex) girlfriend… Lovelorn ballads such as ‘Elephants’ are naive but effective, and provoked a lot of laughter this afternoon… this guy has something about him, watch out!

Annie Booth was on next, and BM is afraid to say she only caught the first few songs, but they were pretty excellent… ‘Chasm’ is particular, first single from the new album, was great… and again one to watch during 2019, these are quality songs delivered by a great singer and she raised the roof (and Ritchie’s eyebrows!) a couple of times during this “acoustic” set with her thrashing guitar.
