What do you do when reality and fantasy intersect? Lustfaust were a German noiserock band active in the 70’s who produced a bewildering array of releases, and who’s history is laid out in almost obsessive detail at www.lustfaust.com. Or were they? There are some people who dare to suggest that Lustfaust are merely the creation of contemporary conceptual artist Jamie Shovlin, created for a Becks Futures exhibition a couple of years ago. Even though I know the latter to be true, the deception is so complete and so maintained I find myself starting to wonder whether the joke is on us and the band actually existed…
A collaboration between Lustfaust ‘vocalist’ Peter Kruger and Schneider TM’s Dirk Dresselhaus further confuses the matter. Is this now a ‘real’ band? Lustfaust are playing some gigs with Dresselhaus to blur the illusion even more….
Anyway, the single itself is remarkably good, the a side a kind of spacerock/ambient drone with amorphous vocals soaring over the top, whilst the b side comes across like some of the more recent works Dave Longstreth or Adam Forkner. Whatever the truth behind Lustfaust is, this record stands on its own merits and is definitely worth seeking out.
