This EP, released back in April (sorry for the late review), is the sound of young Inverness. Released on the Kelvin College-based Electric Honey, this is the next in a long line of anthemic Scottish rock/indie. Does it differentiate itself from the rest… well, let’s see…
Five tracks, and I’m not sure what is the lead track (‘Fear’?) but the first track is a fairly generic mash of Biffy, Nirvana and possibly Green Day (“wrecked my room”, “shadows creeping by my side”) – references to teenage angst but I’m not convinced – they can bash out a chorus though and have some decent lead vocals and instrumentation.
I do think there’s a bit of a glut in the market for this at the moment – but they could step up to the mark, not sure of their live reputation but sounds as if they’d be a pretty exciting prospect.
The other tracks are similar (‘Dirt’), packing quite a punch, a bit downtempo on track 3 (‘Modern Day Cowboy’) with something of a reggae feel to it, but good melodies throughout.
Altogether quite a good prospect if they can rise above some the current cliches of Scotch indie rock – it’s a crowded field, guys.
(Editor’s note: seems we reviewed an early version of this release, three tunes headed by ‘Urrrgh’. Just so you know…)
